What is Globalism?

Globalism is defined as “the operation or planning of economic or foreign policy on a global basis.” In a more simple term, globalism is how the whole world is connected in trades, war, influence, etc. Imperialism and nationalism are the two basis for globalism. There are a few other “isms” that makeup globalism which are colonialism, militarism, and isolationism.

Is Globalism Good or Bad?

Globalism affects the world both positively and negatively. I think that globalism is more of a good thing than a bad thing. Globalism can be through alliances, which can be good if you are attacked, because not every country is going to agree to isolationism. A good example of this is in World War II when Poland was invaded and Germany was trying to get revenge from WWI, what if nobody tried to stop them, or if the Allied Powers didn’t team up? Germany could have taken over Europe and killed more people. It is also helpful in improving technology that the influence is spread from one country to another for better healthcare or just to make everyday life easier. The economy is also a big part of globalism because countries trade throughout the world, and if another countries economy is thriving, then most likely it will help you. The Coronavirus is also a great example of how globalism could have helped in stopping it. If one country found a way to stop the spread, they could have told other countries their strategies.

Are More Women Needed in Top Jobs?

Men make up more percent of the workforce than women. The men to women ratio in total jobs do not match up evenly to how many women hold “top jobs”. In one study, companies with balanced leadership get better profit and it was easier for them to find and attract valuable workers. Should women have the same opportunity as men? Do you think more companies and businesses should even out the number of men and women in high positions? Can companies do more to eliminate this problem?

My thoughts:

I think that women should be given the same opportunities as men. I don’t think that it is fair that companies don’t hire as many women, and I believe businesses could do more to fix this problem. Even if the workforce isn’t 50/50 if 40% of women comprise the total workforce then 40% of higher-up positions should be held by women. In my opinion, it doesn’t really make sense to me for companies to not balance their leadership, because companies that are more balanced were more likely to have higher financial returns than the national average, recruit and achieve more skilled workers, reduced the cost of replacing top executives, and had better customer relations.

Why is there a gender gap? Why are women not getting the same opportunities as men?

The percentage of women and men working is completely unbalanced and unfair. Even the amount of women in high positions such as CEOs, executive committee members, senior managers, and vice presidents are not even. This may be due to companies thinking of women as a sort of risk. Most women become the primary caregiver when they have a child and have to go on paternity leave. They also fear that some women may give up their careers for parenthood. More businesses are starting to try to fix this, but they are not doing enough in manys’ opinion. As of now, all companies are doing is mandating quotas to reach, but some are doing more by allowing more flexibility and autonomy. Until they start doing more the problem is just going to get worse and worse.

2020 Presidential Election Prediction

Before voting starts, this election will be too close to call. There are also too many swing states up in the air. Based on facts and trends, here is more of many predictions on who will win the 2020 Presidential Election.

This map is the results of the 2016 election. Based on the previous election, if Arizona, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Wisconsin vote in the same direction as they did in the past election Trump will win the same swing states as he did in 2016 and he will be re-elected.

Silent Surprise for Trump

Pre-voting polls a week before the election have Biden winning by 7.1 points. “Even this close to the election, polls only remain a snapshot of a moment in time. And some of these polls were taken up to a week ago. This race could still move between now and election day” (Marsh/Olson 2) In other words, an election this close is too close to be sure who the winner will be, because not all voters vote in pre-election polls. I think Trump will win because Biden is barely winning in pre-polls, and most Republicans don’t vote until election day. “Republican party leaders and strategists have said there are plenty of Trump voters out there, they just aren’t speaking up publicly about their support for the president at a time when the political discourse in America is so divisive” (Ayres 1).

Why Trump over Biden

Trump has done more in his first term than Biden has ever done. The economy was the best it has been in years. When the Coronavirus hit the economy went down drastically, which was out of the president’s hands. “In a good sign for Trump, the US economy is largely continuing its march to recovery”(Marsh/Olsen 5). A total of 12.6 million Americans are unemployed, a fall of 1 million from the previous month. The graph below shows Trump’s rapid job growth since the virus.

The orange line on the graph is President Trump’s job creation percent since he has been in office.

The Scarlet Ibis

This is about a boy named Doodles that had a serious medical condition. There are two themes in this story. One of the themes is trying to prove love. The author shows this in multiple ways. Doodle’s brother always showed his love for Doodles. “Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds. When he fell, I grabbed him in my arms, and hugged him, our laughter pealing through the swamp like a ringing bell”(Hurst 2). Doodle’s brother was there for him every time he failed and would always make him feel better. In the story, it says “I began to weep, the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. “Doodle!” I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain”(Hurst 6). When Doodle was gone, he realized how much he loved his brother.

The second theme the author put in my mind during the story was acceptance. In the story, it says “I thought myself pretty smart at things, like holding my breath, running, jumping, or climbing the vines of Old Woman Swamp, and I wanted more than anything else, someone to race to Horsehead landing, someone to box with, someone to perch in with the top fork of the great pine behind the barn. Across the fields and swamps, you could see the sea. I wanted a brother”(Hurst 1). When he thought of having a brother, he thought his brother would be able to do everything that he could do. He wanted someone to race, compete, and have fun with. He was upset at first that Doodles didn’t have the same capabilities that he had. After a while, he started to understand that just because they weren’t the exact same, that didn’t change the love they had for each other. “It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it’s a miracle I didn’t give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle had become mine” (Hurst 2). This showed that Doodle’s brother accepted him for how he was and still loved him even though he wasn’t the same as him.

This is a story that represents two main themes, proving love and acceptance. Brother always wanted to have a brother to get to do things with. When Brother finally got a brother, Doodles was born with severe medical conditions that limited his abilities. Brother always showed loved to Doodles by always being there for him when he failed and supporting him. Even though Brother wanted Doodles to be a “normal” brother like him he learned to accept Doodles for how he was. Brother understood Doodles wasn’t exactly liked him but still loved him the same and never quit on him.
